RECEPTION

the speeches, the meal, the dancing

This part of the day comes around SO quickly! Here are my tips for getting the most out of your reception

01  /  SPEECHES

I LOVE capturing reactions during speeches, the tears, the belly laughs and the face palms – this is another point in the day that is fulllll of emotive moments! But when is best to do them?

Personally, I recommend doing them either before or after your meal rather than between courses – this way things run a little smoother for the kitchen staff, and if your speeches run over (as they quite often do), your food won’t burn! Many couples choose to have their speeches before the meal, so all their guests are able to relax and enjoy their food, and no one is worrying about their speech still lingering over them.

TIP: Try to avoid tall table décor right in front of your faces so I can capture your reactions with as little obstruction as possible! I can always pop it to one side during speeches if needs be!

02  /  FOOD

I eat while you eat – people don’t like to be photographed while eating so this is a time I will nip into another room and leave you in peace. Please provide myself and any second shooters included in your package with a meal during this time – and make sure to request it so it doesn’t clash with speeches!

03  /  TAKE 10

As much as it’s lovely to have all the people who love you the most in one place, it can be a bit overwhelming being the host of your wedding! Try to take 10 minutes just to yourselves at some point through the day, escape the noise and find a quiet place to enjoy some alone time.

04  /  EVENING PORTRAITS

The light can be really beautiful and dreamy around 1-2 hours before sunset. I’ll be avidly watching the weather, ready to grab you if the light looks just right. Even on a busy wedding day, if we can nip out for 5-10 minutes between courses, I promise it will be worth it!!

05  /  FLASH PORTRAITS

In the winter months it gets dark early, but that doesn't mean we can't do some fun flash evening portraits. Personally, I love this vibe!! Let's roam the hallways and create more memories!

06  /  SPARKLERS

I recommend sparklers only in the winter months when they can be done before first dance. It gets dark later in the summer months, and you'll find yourself dragging people off the dance floor and leaving the DJ or band to play to an empty room. This can be a bit of a dance floor killer!

Coordinating sparklers can be a challenge because by this point in the eve, your guests can be a little on the tipsy side, and getting it right can be a logistical challenge! Make sure you order the extra long sparklers that burn gold (they will burn longer and brighter)! Have plenty blow torches to hand - sparklers are notorious for being tricky to light, and burning out fast, so having the right equipment is really important for making the most of your sparkler exit - you don't want to find some have burnt out while you're still busy lighting others. This way we can light several sparklers at once, and they will all be burning at the same time!

Finally, walk slowly (but energetically!) down the sparkler line, have a kiss, have a dance, really milk it!!!

07  /  DJ LIGHTING

While coloured lighting is really fun on the dance floor for the party, it’s worth asking the band or DJ if they can turn off any coloured lights during your first dance. The first dance is an opportunity for some super romantic images and the last thing we want is for your skin to be bright green or pink in the images!

Whether you have a choreographed routine, or plan a romantic sway, you do you! If you’re going for the sway, try to turn around as you go so I can capture you from all angles in the best light!

08  /  CONFETTI CANNONS

Did I mention how great these are?? Who wouldn’t be in the mood to dance after a shower of confetti on the dance floor? And they make for the most epic photos!!

09  /  MY GOODBYE'S

I stay roughly 30 minutes after first dance to capture the atmosphere of the evening before coming to say my goodbye’s and check we’ve captured everything you were after. Then I will head home to back up all your memories onto several hard drives and into the cloud for safe keeping!

IN SUMMARY

• I highly recommend speeches before your meal so the speech givers don’t have it lingering over them for any longer than needed!

• please ask for your photographers to be fed while you eat so we’re ready to photograph when it come to speeches!

• slow down, your day will fly by, set aside 10 minutes of alone time at some point throughout your day

• did I mention confetti cannons?
